Castello Bordonaro

Castello Bordonaro: between medieval fortifications and art

A few kilometers from Cefalù, in the area of Mazzaforno, there is one of the most fascinating historical residences of the territory: Castello Bordonaro. Surrounded by lush nature and an atmosphere of yesteryear, the castle was for centuries a symbol of power and architectural refinement.

Built from a medieval tower, the building was extended and fortified over time. Among the most curious elements are the ingenious internal passages, designed to ensure fast and safe escape routes during any siege: a clear example of defensive architecture of the time.

But Castello Bordonaro is not only strategy: inside there are frescoes of rare beauty, which decorate the main rooms with scenes inspired by the history of Sicily. These paintings transform the interior into a true visual tale, testifying to the high artistic and cultural value of the building.

The link with spirituality is also important: next to the castle stands the Church of Santa Felicita, commissioned by an archdeacon of the cathedral of Cefalù. A sign of the leading role of the Bordonaro family not only politically, but also religiously.

Today the structure has become an institutional seat of the Municipality of Cefalù, keeping its charm intact and continuing to tell its story to those who choose to discover it.
