Excursion to the Rocca of Cefalù
Behind the seaside village stands the imposing Rocca of Cefalù, a limestone cliff 268 meters high that dominates the landscape and preserves centuries of history, legends and wild nature.
The name of the city could derive from here: “Cefalù” has a very marked similarity with the term “Kephaloidion“, from the ancient Greek “kefalis” which means “head”. The cliff has in fact a characteristic conformation that resembles that of a head, which the ancients linked to a legend: according to the Greek myth, the cliff was born from the transformation of the shepherd Dafni, Blinded by divine jealousy and then turned into rock by the god Hermes to make his soul survive.
Through a path immersed in greenery and surrounded by ancient medieval walls, it is possible to climb up to the summit, from which the gaze embraces the entire gulf, from Palermo to Capo D’Orlando. But in addition to boasting a spectacular view, la Rocca is also a natural oasis rich in biodiversity, among the Mediterranean scrub, caves and limestone crevices that seem to hide secrets.
It is accessible from Via Saraceni, starting from Corso Ruggero. The visit takes about two hours of walking and offers an experience between nature, history and mythology, in one of the most fascinating places of Cefalù.
