Castelbuono, between Norman history and authentic flavors
A little over half an hour from Cefalù, embraced by the hills of the Madonie Park and at the foot of Mount Milocco, is Castelbuono, a medieval village that seems to come out of an ancient story. Walking through its cobblestone streets means taking a step back in time, to the very roots of Sicilian history.
The origins of Castelbuono date back to 1316, when Francesco I of Ventimiglia built a castle on a pre-existing Byzantine settlement. Around this imposing noble residence, transformed and enlarged in the following centuries by the Arab and Norman dominations, developed the town that we know today.
The well-preserved and picturesque Castello dei Ventimiglia still dominates the village. With its four corner towers, three levels and the underground floor, it is a true architectural gem. Inside it houses the Palatine Chapel of Sant’Anna, one of the most refined environments of the complex, where golden baroque stuccos and angelic figures create an atmosphere of intense spirituality.
In addition to historical monuments, Castelbuono also offers museum spaces of great interest. The Civic Museum, housed right in the castle, collects collections dedicated to the cult of Sant’Anna, a modern art gallery and a rich program of temporary exhibitions. For nature and science lovers, the Natural Museum Francesco Minà Palumbo is a must-see, displaying the collections and studies conducted by the famous naturalist on the Madonie between 1837 and 1899.
But Castelbuono is not only culture and history. It is also a place where the culinary tradition tells with simplicity the soul of the territory. Here, the flavors are authentic and strong, fruit of local ingredients such as almonds, pistachios, raisins, lemon, parsley and olive oil. Recipes handed down from generation to generation give back the identity of a people who have made Mediterranean cuisine a heritage to be preserved.
Whether you come to admire the monuments, stroll through the alleys, explore the museums or sit down at the table to enjoy genuine dishes, Castelbuono leaves in your heart the feeling of having lived a true experience, far from time and close to the soul of Sicily.
